Have mercy on me, O God, according to your steadfast love; according to your abundant mercy blot out my transgressions. Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me. Behold, you delight in truth in the inward being, and you teach me wisdom in the secret heart. Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Let me hear joy and gladness; let the bones that you have broken rejoice. Hide your face from my sins, and blot out all my iniquities. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen!

Call to Confession                                              Deuteronomy 5:6-21
Prayer of Confession
Our Father, we are sinful and you are holy. Your word has shown us how often we have offended you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. There is nothing in us that gives us reason for hope. Our hearts are filled with the love of the world; our minds are dark and are assailed by doubts; our wills are too often given to selfishness and our bodies to laziness and unrighteousness. By sinning against our neighbors, we have also sinned against you, in whose image they were created. Our Father, although you are a holy God who cannot look upon sin, look upon Christ our Savior and forgive us for the sake of his blood and righteousness. We ask also that you would give us an increase of the grace of your Holy Spirit, so that we may walk in your ways, for your glory and the good of our neighbor; in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Prayer of Confession                        (From the reformed liturgy of John Knox 1560)
Almighty God, we are unworthy to come into your presence because of our many sins. We do not deserve any grace or mercy from you. We have sinned against you, and we have offended you. And yet, O Lord, as we acknowledge our sins and offenses, so also do we acknowledge you to be a merciful God, a loving and favorable Father, to all who turn to you. And so we humbly ask you, for the sake of Christ your son, to show mercy to us, and forgive us all our offenses. Forgive the sins of our youth, and the sins of our old age. By your Spirit, O God, take possession of our hearts, so that, not only the actions of our life, but also the words of our mouths, and the smallest thoughts of our minds, may be guided and governed by you. Psalm 2

We’ll be singing this setting of Psalm 2 this Lord’s Day:

Wherefore do the nations rage,
And the people vainly dream,
That in triumph they can wage
War against the Lord supreme?
His Anointed they deride,
And the rulers plotting say:
Their dominion be defied,
Let us cast their bonds away.

But the Lord will scorn them all,
Calm He sits enthroned on high;
Soon His wrath will on them fall,
Angered then He will reply:
Yet according to My will
I have set My King to reign,
And on Zion’s holy hill
Mine Anointed I maintain.

This the word declared to me,
This Jehovah’s firm decree:
Thou art my belovèd Son,
Yea, I have begotten Thee.
Ask and have Thy full demands,
Thine shall all the heathen be,
Thine the utmost of the lands,
They shall be possessed of Thee.

Dash them like a potter’s urn,
Thou shalt break them with a rod.
Therefore, kings and judges, learn
Anxiously to serve your God.
Kiss the Son and worship Him,
Lest ye perish in the way;
Blest are all who trust in Him,
Yea, supremely blest are they.

The Lord’s Day (August 28, 2011)

This Lord’s Day we’ll complete our summer series in the Psalms as we look at Psalm 49, a sobering assessment of human weakness centered around a glorious declaration of confidence in God’s faithfulness extending even beyond death. Jesus connected this Psalm with his own death and resurrection and with the calling of the church to follow him.

“Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life, 8 for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice, 9 that he should live on forever and never see the pit.” (Psa 49:7-9)

“But God will ransom my soul from the power of Sheol, for he will receive me.” (Psa 49:15)

In the evening service, we’ll take a break from our series on a Christian worldview in order to introduce the Book of Daniel as a whole. We’ll be working through Daniel in the morning service this fall.

“And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. 3 And those who are wise shall shine like the brightness of the sky above; and those who turn many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever. 4 But you, Daniel, shut up the words and seal the book, until the time of the end. Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.” (Dan 12:2-4)

Our Psalm of the Month is Psalm 39 (Psalter Hymnal #68).
